چکیده

Sensor network devices have limited battery resources primarily consumed by radio communication. Network nodes play different communication roles and consequently consume different amounts of energy. Nodes with heavier communication burdens prematurely deplete their batteries and potentially partition the network such that other nodes are unable to communicate despite having energy remaining. We have developed Seesaw, an asynchronous and asymmetric MAC protocol that balances the energy consumption among nodes with differing loads, and thus prolongs network lifetime. Balancing is possible through Seesaw mechanisms that allow heavily burdened nodes to shift some of the effort of maintaining communication to more lightly loaded neighboring nodes. We show how to exploit the flexibility of asynchrony and asymmetry to balance energy consumption across the network, and develop methods for automatically tuning each node to achieve this.

Game Theory based Energy Efficient Hybrid MAC Protocol for Lifetime Enhancement of Wireless Sensor Network

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) comprising of tiny, power-constrained nodes are getting very popular due to their potential uses in wide applications like monitoring of environmental conditions, various military and civilian applications. The critical issue in the node is energy consumption since it is operated using battery, therefore its lifetime should be maximized for effective utilization ...

Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Energy Consumption in S-MAC Protocol Using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets

One of the features of wireless sensor networks is that the nodes in this network have limited power sources. Therefore, assessment of energy consumption in these networks is very important. What has been common practice has been the use of traditional simulators to evaluate the energy consumption of the nodes in these networks. Simulators often have problems such as fluctuating output values i...

Design and Analysis of Analytical Model of Novel Energy Constrained Cooperative Mac Protocol for Ad-hoc Networks

Relay assisted cooperative wireless communication has been shown to have significant performance gains over the legacy direct transmission scheme for Ad-hoc network. An efficient cooperative Medium Access Control Scheme (MAC) is needed to solve the difficulties induced by relaying and cooperative computing. Another challenging issue is the extension of network lifetime of an Ad-hoc network with...

HYREP: A Hybrid Low-Power Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, a new hybrid routing protocol is presented for low power Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The new system uses an integrated piezoelectric energy harvester to increase the network lifetime. Power dissipation is one of the most important factors affecting lifetime of a WSN. An innovative cluster head selection technique using Cuckoo optimization algorithm has been used in the desig...

Modeling an Energy-Efficient MAC Layer Protocol

In wireless adhoc networks, channel and energy capacities are scarce resources. In our previous work we proposed BLAM, a new energy aware MAC layer enhancement for the IEEE 802.11 protocol to save the energy and channel capacity wasted in collisions. In this paper we introduce a collision model to analytically compare BLAM to the IEEE 802.11. Using this model we provide worst-case and best-case...
